Lungwah "Revolt"
New release from the prolific Bethesda based Warm Data label
When this latest offering from Warm Data dropped into the Absurd’s mailbox this week both the label and the artist were new to our ears, but the second the play button was hit we knew this album was something special.
The press release described Lungwah’s debut album ‘Revolt’ as “a dark, uncompromising opus that melds dub atmospherics, sparse techno and 2 step rhythms to take the listener through a panoramic shape shifting soundscape.”
TheAbsurd were intrigued as the minimal echoing introduction of "And Then Came the Dawn" instantly set the scene with an odd tranquillity that draws you into Lungwah's weird and wonderful world. By the time the beats kick in on "Hiss and Hertz" you're sucked in with no possibility of escape - as if you’d want to.
Sparse techno ambience is contrasted with an overall grand cinematic feel that takes the listener on a journey across huge ancient wilderness and through decayed cityscapes, while the overlaying clicks and scratches create an organic feel that contrasts natural sounds and haunting harmonies with harsh, disjointed, industrial rhythms.
This album creates a world that is restricted only by the imagination of the listener – it is dark, it is uncompromising, but Lungwah have created something beautiful with ‘Revolt’ that will have you reaching straight for the replay button as soon as it ends.
As you read this theAbsurd are already trawling through Warm Data’s back catalogue.
